About our “Promethean Fire Continuum Series” Plasma Globe

This is the new series of our popular “Promethean Fire” globe. This series will be outfitted with a brass plaque identifying the globe as “Promethean Fire Continuum Series.”

This unique globe requires a “Break-In Period” to achieve its optimum display characteristics. The globe is beautiful from day one but after about 1,000 to 2,000 hours of activity it will be even better. This description follows that maturing process. There is also a video comparison further down the page.

Early Stage Globe

The “Promethean Fire” Plasma Globe produces an unearthly blue aura which glows more intensely as the power is turned up. Greenish white, wispy, soft tendrils appear at the center electrode when the globe is turned on. As power is increased the center electrode and the globe’s interior wall begin to glow blue while the interior fills with a bluish fog. All of this presents a nice contrasting background as the ever enlarging green and white tendrils reach out and strike the glass. As the power level approaches 50% some of the tendrils erupt into bright white lightning bolts that are very energetic.

The upper range of power is where the Promethean Fire globe starts to show why it is really special. By now the lightning strikes are filling the globe and placing a hand on the globe will produce tendrils with sustained looping characteristics which our other globes cannot duplicate. These long-lasting rope-like effects are what we were trying to achieve when the gas mixture was formulated.

Mature “Broken-In” Globe

New globes are usually a bit too active to get the best looping effects but as they mature the effects soften and slow a bit when the globe is untouched. This softening and fattening of the tendrils also results in the greenish color becoming more vibrant. With this maturing a hand will now produce more sustained beautiful long looping ropes when the globe is touched. This break-in period takes about 1,000 to 2,000 hours of operation to occur but the globes are gorgeous from day one so we strongly suggest that you enjoy every hour and not rush the process.

After 3,000 to 5,000 hours an unattended globe will have vivid greenish white tendrils waving slowly in a bluish fog inside of an electric blue colored globe with occasional spontaneous white lightning strikes to the glass. Touching the globe will make it come alive! Long looping tendrils will reach out to your hand and you can drag them down the globe and release them to explode on their own against the base and electrode tower.

We have found that after about 3,000 to 5,000 hours the globe effects stabilize. (In case you are wondering, we installed electronic timing meters in the base of our test globes and videoed them periodically). The main video on this site shows our test globe when it had logged just around 10,000 hours. There is another video that shows a comparison of three globes at various stages in the maturing process. Please keep in mind that no two globes are ever exactly alike and our testing can only give a close approximation of what can be expected of another globe.

⚠️ Important Notes ⚠️

All of the pictures and videos of our plasma effects were taken in near darkness. The descriptions of the effects are based on observations of the globes in the same near darkness. Just as the Northern Lights cannot be seen during the day, our globe’s effects are best viewed in a darkened environment. Increasing levels of ambient light will wash out the effect colors until they almost disappear under full sunlight.

Please be aware that no two plasma globes are exactly alike, and there may be variations in color and effect from globe to globe. We test and compare over a dozen globes before selecting the globe to be used as the best overall example of the series. We make every effort to photograph and present our globes as accurately as possible, but Videos and Photos on this website should be used solely as a guide to what a product should look like, not as an exact representation. Rest assured your plasma globe will be unique and awesome!

Our plasma globes are made from temperature-hardened, laboratory-strength blown glass. Because the glass is hand blown, it is normal for it to have some imperfections. Upon close inspection, you may find small bubbles in the glass or minor scuffs. These imperfections will be completely invisible under normal operating conditions (i.e. a darkened room).

The Ultimate Plasma Globe

Our “Museum Series” Plasma Globe lineup has gotten a major upgrade!

The All-New “Continuum Series”

The Aurora Plasma Design flagship product for over 10 years, our 15-inch “Museum Series” globe has received a series of upgrades to make it better than ever! With our new “Continuum Series,” the plasma globe body has been completely redesigned with a number of improvements.

Stylish, Black Wood Base

We’ve always wanted to make a globe with a black base, but all our attempts have inevitably resulted in the wood grain disappearing, making the base appear to be made from plastic. We finally figured it out though! Our new bases are black “ebonized” ash, which retains the wood grain while giving that sought-after black color that so many people have asked us for.

Premium Controls

Our Continuum Series globes have replaced the previous plastic knobs with luxurious machined aluminum knobs, the kind you might see on high end audio equipment. Paired with these knobs is a new high quality carbon potentiometer, which provides a buttery smooth feel and precise control over the plasma display.

We’ve also added a separate on/off switch with a built-in, dimmed LED indicator. The separate power switch makes ignition of the plasma gasses much more reliable, especially with our more power-hungry globes like “Emerald Fury” and “Promethean Fire.”

12" Continuum Series Globe

For the first time ever, we are offering a 12-inch version of our Professional Plasma Globes! Initially available in “Genesis” style, with “Promethean Fire” coming soon, and more styles coming in the future!

The Same Dazzling Effects

“Continuum Series” globes have the same effects that are proven and loved by our many customers. We are initally offering the 15-inch Continuum Series in “Genesis” and “Emerald Fury” styles, with “Promethean Fire” coming soon.

One Final Touch

We have always considered the controls to be on the back side of the globe, but many customers like having the controls on the front, and having the power input in the same place was an inconvenience. To solve this, we have now moved the power receptacle to the underside of the globe, allowing you to position the globe however your want without the cord getting in your way!

An interesting conversation piece

After purchasing an entry level museum store quality plasma ball I wasn't impressed with the quality, but for $25 I wasn't expecting much. Where do you find that balance between a science museum and retail? And the winner goes to Aurora. In our house it serves multiple roles, hallway light, science experiment, and art object. The quality of the materials really sets its self apart from the mass. The feel of the hand blown glass has an interesting tactile feel (not mass produced). It's the imperfections that contribute to the quality. We got the 12" in and it's sizable. In fact looking at it I initially thought they sent me the bigger version. Let's just say it has a presence. The glow and flow of the beams is quite mezmorizing. I like the ability to increase or decrease power and adaptability to have controls in the front or rear (the underside power cord allows this). And lastly, the packaging was beyond belief...let's just say overkill, but safe. If you this is within your budget and there's a use case I think it's well worth the money spent. In short it's beautiful and we love it!

Highly Satisfied - 12" Promethean Fire Globe

The 12” Promethean Fire globe that I received was exactly as shown in the preview video. It has operated flawlessly the several weeks I have owned it. Although the twelve-inch globe is substantial in size, scale is needed to show off the unbelievable effects. Everything about it is high quality which is evidenced by observation and operation. Whether touching the globe or looking at it as it operates, one is awed by the sight. Interaction with the staff was great and the globe arrived promptly and safely. I highly recommend these globes and Aurora Plasma Design

take a trip to prehistoric Earth

when I went to Rutgers I learned about the evolution of life on Earth. The Natural Museum of History in NYC has artistic drawings of what they thought primordial life looked like. The green light in rarified atmospheric effects in this Globe resemble the artistic beginning of life drawings at the Natural museum of History. I'm talking about volcanoes smitten by lightning...The lightning has a prehistoric yet soft and silent fluidic motion even on the lowest setting.... I can't recommend it enough

Amazing plasma globe!

Like anyone else nowadays, I read the reviews on these plasma globes before my purchase.
I can tell you the globe is as incredible as they say it is. The colours are amazing. It’s almost hypnotizing. Definitely worth the purchase and we will likely be buying another one! The globe was packaged very well, and it was shipped quickly.

Absolutely Stunning!

You get the measurements, you see the pics and videos. But when it shows up, you will be amazed at the size and elegance of these globes! Don’t even need to turn it on to look amazing!
The first one I got was defective, the collar around the globe wasn’t attached correctly or something; in no time at all we were able to reach a suitable solution and I had a replacement in a week! If I had room, I’d get all of the museum globes!
This type specifically is unlike any other globe I’ve seen, true to its description. It is just like in the videos, long ropes of bright white plasma that snake everywhere inside the globe. No idea how I’m ever gonna get 3000 hours into this thing, but I do look forward to it!
